JEFFREY SIPPEL & NEBOJŠA LAZIĆ

MESTO SUSRETA

Svesno stvara situaciju haosa gde „slika samu sebe slika”, a zatim preuzima kontrolu i smišljenim povezivanjem niza „slučajnosti” dovodi sliku u organizovanu likovnu celinu.

Jeffrey Sippel and Nebojša Lazić

A Place of Meeting

The exhibition “A Place of Meeting” is the result of professional cooperation and personal friendship started thirty years ago between two artists from two different continents, Europe and America. American artist Jeffrey Sippel and Novi Sad artist Nebojsa Lazić collaborated during the nineties of the last century at the Tamarind Institute of Lithography (Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA). At that time, Lazić was studying to become a Tamarind Master Printer, and Sippel was serving as the Education Director of Tamarind Institute. They were connected by curiosity and the desire for constant research and improvement in the field of graphics, painting, drawing and mulltiple combinations of techniques, but also to collaborate with other artists in the common search for the best way to express ideas and thoughts of other artists practicing the art of lithography. This became the basis on which their collaboration and friendship is maintained even today, and this exhibition is a unique opportunity to see the artistic dialogue that has developed between these two artists.

Jeffrey Sippel uses floral motifs, abstracting them in shape and form. He strives to achieve a balance between illusion and the evocative quality of making abstract marks. He works on paper, mylar or considers these visual investigations to be an essential inspiration in working with students, collaborating with colleagues and in his personal work. “Collaboration with other artists continues to play an active role in my artistic work. I find such creative interaction very exciting, as it has a lasting, direct or indirect, impact on my artwork.” (Jeffrey Sippel)

Nebojša Lazić transferred his visual research in the field of lithography to painting, which provided him with an important space for relaxation. He approaches painting as an artistic media exercise for thinking about the world of modernist painting. He builds an abstract image in layers, by spilling paint on the canvas, and physically demanding expressive gestures. He consciously creates a situation where “a painting paints itself”, and then he takes control by deliberately connecting a series of “coincidences” in the painting into an organized artistic whole. Lazić believes that, at the current moment, expressionist abstract painting is “the only front of defense of visuality”, against the general production in the field of visual media, the equalization of everyday life and the world of art, as well as the musealization of new media art.

Jeffrey Sippel will spend a few days in Novi Sad on a joint trip through Europe with Nebojša Lazić, from Dortmund to the Sićevačka gorge, and their dialogue exhibition in the Mali Likovni Salon, this time exceptionally, will last only two days.
